15 Posts Containing My Best Design Advice

15 Posts Containing My Best Design Advice - roomfortuesday.comSometimes I forget just how many blog posts I’ve shared over the past decade. It’s also crazy to think I’ve been posting here on the blog for nine years! Time flies. Last week, I had an interview with a journalist (shoutout to Laura for being so lovely!) who works for Annie Selke. We spent about an hour on the phone together and she asked me such thoughtful questions about my career, design background, and how this blog came to fruition all those years ago. She said one thing that immediately struck her early in our conversation was my passion for sharing topics centered around design education. She asked my favorite outlet for sharing design inspiration and snippets of my home… of course I replied here on the blog. Why? It feels like our place… the right place for posts like that to live. It’s a permanent, searchable resource where I have the freedom to share & chat with friends and home enthusiasts as I please. It’s also a place you can always come back to for information and inspiration. Unlike social media stories that disappear, have time constraints, or are at the mercy of an algorithm, if I’m putting in my time & effort to share- I’ve always wanted to do it wholeheartedly on a platform that feels like my own. Anyway… our conversations got me thinking. I’ve been listening to and reading snippets from others in my field that state blogs are on their way out. I actually agree and it’s reflected here in my own data, but this special place still feels right for me. It still feels like the best place for informative, fun, and educational resources to live (permanently).

In that spirt, I pulled together my favorite design posts from the archives for you. These posts contain my very best interior advice! Whether you’re struggling to choose the right paint color, need help with floor planning, can’t decide on furniture, or are just looking for some design inspiration… definitely scroll through some of these past posts or pin them for later. They’ll be here whenever you’re ready to tackle that project or need to look back for advice. There are a lot of good ones worth revisiting- or maybe you missed some of these the first time around. Click through for my personal favorites… and thanks for continually showing up to read and say hello! As Laura said, this personal place feels like a community and collection of valuable resources, which is truly the highest compliment. I’ll be sure to share the interview and our conversation once it’s available!

The blog post titles are pretty self explanatory, so I’m not going to elaborate on what each post contains, for the sake of keeping this to a reasonable length. Of course always feel free to leave me questions in the comment section at the bottom of the post! Let’s dive in…

Looking for more of these types of posts? I have hundreds of them (seriously)! Use the search bar in the top right corner and try searching the following general keywords: “how to“, “designer trick“, “tips“, “design eye training“, “DIY“, “interior design“, etc. If you’re searching for something specific, search that term… like “window treatments” or “roman shade“.

You can also use the dropdown categories in the upper left navigation under the “Blog” section. Looking for sources? You can find everything in my home (including paint colors) within the shop section! My Amazon lists may also be helpful, as well as my LTK page.  As always, thank you for your continued support, for reading, for commenting, and for being such lovely friends. You are a bright spot in my day and I’m so lucky to have a job I absolutely love that allows me to connect with so many wonderful people. Check back on Friday for a fun & festive post from Peggi, then I’ll have a bonus blog post for you on Saturday!

  1. Good morning! How lovely. I look forward to reading your interview when it’s available. For years I’ve been astounded at the amount of clear, helpful information and inspiration you’ve provided here. Truly, the volume alone is admirable, but the fact that your heart and passion shines through in every word, original image and comment is what makes this space special-a real community. Although I might not like it or be ready when it occurs, I understand change happens. My issue with the evolution of social media is the artificial, forced nature. The platforms and algorithms are driving the changes rather than the consumers. I don’t appreciate that… What I do appreciate are the influencers who maintain blogs! I love having a place to reference and enjoy a leisurely read. So, thank you, thank you, thank you for creating and maintaining this most magical place. I will joyfully visit and participate for as long as you are inclined to host it! Now, I’ve got some posts to revisit! XO💜

    1. Good morning, Peggi! Your kind words made my day- thank you! I wholeheartedly agree when it comes to social media… it’s a tricky balance when you rely on it to make a living, but these days it’s all so calculated. I’d definitely rather share here… even if it’s not reaching many people. I like having a place that feels like mine, and also knowing that the posts I share can easily be accessed & searched at any- which is hopefully helpful! Anyway, I love my job. I feel lucky to be doing something that brings me so much joy. I hope you have a fabulous day ahead! I’m off to pack some orders at Tuesday Made :) feeling thankful all around this morning! xo

  2. Good morning friend! 9 years?! What an incredible accomplishment. When I read that it got me thinking about how long this space has been my morning coffee on the patio routine. For at least two years I’d read the post, the comments, and casually slide out without so much as a hello. I didn’t start commenting until we moved into this house- 6 years ago. That’s a solid 8 years. It’s amazing to think about all that’s been shared here, not just in the design forum, but also in the way of friendship. And yet another element, which goes beyond measure, is the growth we’ve no doubt all experienced, because of the enrichment of knowledge, experience, and information you’ve shared here. The sheer amount of posts in your archives is astounding. I’d be so curious to know the number. From a reader perspective, the social media rise has influenced blog format in a negative direction (pun intended). Most blogs I stumble across feel less like an informative blog and more like an extended Instagram caption. The content may be there, but there’s nothing to bite into. This space is different. In the sea of dime-a-dozen you’ve carved out a well designed space where there’s meat behind the bite: clarity of information to spur the diy topic at hand; organized thoughts behind trends and design decisions; educational topics that push a person to think beyond their design comfort level. And we haven’t even mentioned the gorgeous photography, or the fact that you take the time to engage your readers. So many blogs out there don’t reply to comments and as such, sell themselves short on the community that’s behind them. I would agree that those blogs may fall by the wayside. While I can’t bring myself to imagine the day we won’t spend our mornings here, I know when it comes there will be a much larger door for you to run through when this window closes. And rest assured, behind you will be the cheers of all of us who have had the privilege of getting to know you. Dare I say that day won’t be any time soon? At least I hope not. I love to revisit the oldest posts in the archives in hopes of finding the rare post I’ve yet to read- it’s tough to find! I can’t wait to read the article when it becomes available- have a happy Wednesday friend! I’m off to scour the archives! Xo

    1. Good morning, Lauren! Thank you! It has been a fun 9 years and I’m looking forward to many more :) I have no plans of stopping. I so appreciate that you want to spend your time each morning on the patio reading with your coffee. You made my day! I love our friends here and think about all of you often :) It’s a special community filled with the BEST people. I’ve shared almost 1,500 blog posts over the past 9 years… so crazy! Lots and lots of hours. I wish I could share quick snippets and fast posts, but you know me- I tend to be very wordy. Initially, I always thought nobody would be interested or read my posts because they’re always so long and time consuming. Anyway, your kind words made my day… like always. Thank you! Hope you and the family are having an awesome week. Cheers to a fun 4th of July weekend ahead :) xo

  3. I’m so glad you keep your blog a priority! I love blogs for all the reasons you mentioned, but especially that I can keep coming back to it whenever I want to reference a picture, tutorial, source, etc. Social media is terrible for that. And I love still pictures, I just can’t get into reels. It makes me feel old, but I’m only 25 😅. Anyway, thank you, I really appreciate you putting the time into making such a beautiful, helpful, and personable resource!

    1. Thanks, Amanda! That’s how I am too… I feel like websites and blogs give content a permanent place to live that I can always reference later on, when the timing is right. I never reference social media once it has disappeared or been saved to a highlight. I’m with you on reels- I REALLY struggle to mix those in because they’re just not my cup of tea. Thanks for taking the time to comment and for showing up to read! I appreciate it so much. Hope you’re having a wonderful week :)

  4. I cannot wait to read the interview. How exciting! My days don’t feel the same if I do not come here to read your post. Like Peggi and Lauren said they are so well thought out, informative, and inspirational. I too would rather read about a designers thoughts on projects or how they designed a room instead of getting the whiplash video of pictures & sometimes annoying music (my phone is usually on mute when scrolling insta). I know it takes a lot of work & time to put together a post and I appreciate you and this platform so much. I’ll be selfish and beg you to keep blogging!
There are so many of your posts that I have pinned on Pinterest. I have to ask do you recall what your first post was about? I’ve been racking my brain trying to remember how I found your blog. Possibly from Pinterest? Congrats to 9 years on the blog and the interview. Enjoy your trip and family. Happy 4th!

    1. Thanks, Danna! You are so sweet for showing up to read and chat with me multiple times each week. I appreciate and enjoy it so much! The music on social media can definitely be loud and annoying… the trending voiceovers are my pet peeve. Ha! I think my first post was just a “Hi, I’m Sarah and this my blog” type of post… but in terms of renovations, it was the bathroom at our first house (which is totally not my aesthetic anymore). I hope you have a happy 4th, too Danna! We’re headed to visit our family for a relaxing weekend. Can’t wait! xo

  5. Wenda Scott says:

i love your blog and would absolutely hate to see you stop.

    1. Thanks, Wenda! I have no plans of stopping anytime soon :) I still really enjoy writing and sharing here. Have a great day!

  6. Melanie Carter says:

    Hi Sarah,
I had to comment on this one. Your blog is top-notch. I have perused many a blog, and recently narrowed down to a few favorites, including yours. I think it is classy that you reply to your readers and like someone else mentioned…your content is thoughtful, informative, and well-written, accompanied with gorgeous photos and links. I also look forward to reading Peggi’s responses to your posts, lol!
Keep doing what you love and what you’re really awesome at…you’re a standout.
    Melanie

    1. You made my day, Melanie! Thank you so much. That means a lot to me. Peggi’s writing and commentary is the best!! I love her. I hope you’re having a great week!

  7. I sure hope blogs don’t go away, especially yours. I read blogs rather than magazines and count on being able to find something I remember reading. Thanks for writing really wonderful posts!

    1. Thank you, Teri! I love writing and sharing here :) Have a great day!

  8. May I add an honorable mention? The post about picking out your kitchen hardware. That post was so super helpful to me when I was renovating my kitchen. And I have sent it to friends when they are designing theirs.
Honestly though, your entire blog is amazing. You could publish a book with your advice!

    1. Laura Fenton says:

Sarah, I’ll help you write it when you do!

      1. I would love that, Laura! What a dream.

    2. Thank you, Ashley! I love hearing that it was helpful. Day made :) Hope you have a lovely weekend ahead!
