If you’re entertaining outdoors this fall, try making a hot cocktail! It’s the perfect way to warm up and celebrate the season. With Halloween just around the corner, I decided to try this hot buttered rum recipe:
The recipe comes from one of my favorite cocktail books, Winter Cocktails, by expert mixologist Maria Del Mar Sacasa. Here’s what you will need…
Drinks:
6 ounces dark rum
3 cups hot water
Vanilla Bean Butter:
4 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temp
1 vanilla bean pod, seeds scraped
1 1/2 tablespoons packed dark brown sugar
Pinch of salt
Pinch of ground cinnamon and/or mace
INSTRUCTIONS:
For the Drinks:
Stir together rum and water. Place 1 tablespoon Vanilla Bean Butter in each of 4 warmed cups. Pour rum into cups. Garnish with cinnamon and serve.
For the Vanilla Bean Butter:
Vigorously mix ingredients together in a medium bowl. Set aside until ready to use. If making in advance, store in a small bowl wrapped in plastic, refrigerate, and then return to room temperature before using.
The butter may sound like an odd addition, but it brings a silky quality to the drink. You’ve got to try it! The book has a lot of great cool and cold weather recipes; if you’re interested in buying it, you can find it here. Let me know what you think of the hot buttered rum!
