The fact that it has taken us THIS LONG to swap out lots of our ugly, builder-grade light fixtures. First up… sconces! I found a lot of beautiful options. Remember the DIY shade upgrade I shared during our guest bathroom renovation? That one also came from Lowe’s (pictured below).

Swapping Our Builder Grade Lights + The Best Fixtures From Lowe's - roomfortuesday.comEmmett and I couldn’t wait to see the weird scalloped seashell sconces in our basement go! I actually used a fixture from the flush mount collage (keep scrolling), but installed it as a wall sconce. I love the fun star shape and it’s a quarter of the price of a very similar designer option.

Swapping Our Builder Grade Lights + The Best Fixtures From Lowe's - roomfortuesday.comNext up- ceilings fans. You guys know I prefer a white ceiling fan so it blends nicely. If you’re going to have a fan- my motto is “make it disappear”. Keep it simple and sleek for the best look.

We ended up swapping the brown fan in our master bedroom. We needed a fan with a light that wasn’t bulky, but was still bright. I landed on #9 from the roundup and am loving it!

Swapping Our Builder Grade Lights + The Best Fixtures From Lowe's - roomfortuesday.comDoesn’t it look a million times better? Despite not having touched this room in terms of renovating or updating, a simple fixture swap makes a huge difference.

Swapping Our Builder Grade Lights + The Best Fixtures From Lowe's - roomfortuesday.comMoving right along to flush mount fixtures. We have a bunch of builder-grade “boob lights” scattered throughout our house that had to go.

See what I mean? I ordered #2, #3, and #5. Our upstairs hallway got an update and we still need to install the other two… stay tuned for that! It has definitely been busy around here, but the effort is worth the updated look.

Swapping Our Builder Grade Lights + The Best Fixtures From Lowe's - roomfortuesday.comSemi flush mounts are another fixture I often use. They’re great for those in-between ceilings that are not quite tall enough for a pendant or chandelier, but are too tall for a low profile flush mount.

We used #4 in our guest bathroom renovation and I still think it’s gorgeous and would use it again! I tried to choose classic options that work with multiple aesthetics.

Swapping Our Builder Grade Lights + The Best Fixtures From Lowe's - roomfortuesday.comI have a modern table lamp that I get lots of compliments and questions about and you guys can’t believe it’s from Lowe’s (or the price tag!). Any guesses which one?

#5! I have it in white (pictured below). The last time I shared an image of it was after I finished my enamel desk makeover. I also bought #7 and #8, but I have to confess- they’re still sitting in the boxes. I’m hoping to get those out and style them as soon as our One Room Challenge drywall dust settles (aka- once I have time to clean).

Swapping Our Builder Grade Lights + The Best Fixtures From Lowe's - roomfortuesday.comMy favorite fixture from this entire post came from the floor lamp roundup…

I bought #5 and it is stunning in person! I’m actually going to buy another one before they sell out, so I can flank them on each side of a bed or credenza. It’s currently living in our entryway until I order a match! I’m all about that metal shade.

Swapping Our Builder Grade Lights + The Best Fixtures From Lowe's - roomfortuesday.comCruising right along to the chandelier department. Unfortunately, I don’t have a beautiful chandelier installed in our house YET. We’ll eventually need to replace the one in the entryway, and hopefully we can tackle the dining room soon. Some of my favorites include…

Since I don’t have one installed in my house quite yet, I thought I’d drop an image of one in my bestie’s dining room (#6). Remember Emily’s modern kitchen tour? They’re our neighbors and she’s also a designer.

Swapping Our Builder Grade Lights + The Best Fixtures From Lowe's - roomfortuesday.comNext up… pendants! It took me forever to narrow these down because I found so many good ones, so this roundup has a few extras.

Swapping Our Builder Grade Lights + The Best Fixtures From Lowe's - roomfortuesday.com01: kichler maclain brass pendant // 02: progress lighting ellyson pendant // 03: safavieh kimball gold pendant // 04: quoizel emery nickel pendant // 05: sea gull lighting pratt pendant // 06: millennium lighting brass lantern pendant // 07: progress lighting kempsey pendant // 08: safavieh archer gold pendant // 09: kichler raffiana coastal pendant // 10: kichler brushed nickel pendant // 11: sea gull lighting modern globe pendant // 12: westmore lighting brass pendant // 13: westmore lighting star pendant // 14: progress lighting holcombe pendant

I’ve always wanted a star pendant (#13), but I ended up buying #7 for one of the guest bedrooms, as well as installing #3 in another guest room (pictured below). Can you believe the builder grade before? HAHA!

Swapping Our Builder Grade Lights + The Best Fixtures From Lowe's - roomfortuesday.comLastly, I wanted to share another lighting component that isn’t necessarily a fixture, but also received a nice upgrade. Do you remember the brass lamps I thrifted over the summer? The existing tapered shades were pretty but were in terrible condition. They were yellowed, dented, and beyond salvaging. I found a great budget-friendly shade from Lowe’s and swapped our bedside lamp shades. They look a lot better and I actually think the square shape better fits the brass base. What do you think?

Swapping Our Builder Grade Lights + The Best Fixtures From Lowe's - roomfortuesday.comWhew! I know that was a LOT, but pin away and hopefully this post will be helpful for future renovations- or if your home could also use some light fixture swaps. I feel like the builder-grade lighting throughout my house really gives it the tract home stamp- which isn’t a good thing. It feels more personal and custom having lighting that is representative of our aesthetic.

Swapping Our Builder Grade Lights + The Best Fixtures From Lowe's - roomfortuesday.comWe still have more lighting to trade, but things are looking a lot better. I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comment section below! Any favorite fixtures?

  1. Wowza. That’s quite a selection. I really love all of the star fixtures; I’m going to go back to your basement reveal to look for that one on the wall! I’m also digging the metal shades, and some of those able lamps are crazy beautiful. I definitely still have one or two ceiling fixtures that need upgrading, but I’m too chicken to mess with electricity so I try to get my electrician out for several at a time. I feel like lighting selections have really improved in the past 5-10 years, soooo why do they even still sell boob lights?! Can’t wait to check out your progress tomorrow!

  2. Thank you for this post. I actually built my house through a builder 8 years ago and still have not changed out the boob lights. Other projects and changing other hideous builder grade lighting has taken precedent. I’m finally getting around to those and replacing some ceiling fans so this post will come in handy.

    1. So many boob lights, so little time! haha! I feel you on other projects taking precedent :) xo

  3. What a great round up. Unless you are going specifically for a light, it is very easy to over look the great options at Lowes. I am really enjoying all the replacements and fixes you are showing for a slightly older home. It makes such a difference.

About 4 months after we moved into our new home the previous owners came by to pick up some misdelivered Christmas presents. They were floored at the changes in the home. All I had done (at that point) was remove the popcorn ceilings, paint in a better neutral, and change the dated lighting to a coordinating combination of lights featuring #1 in the semi flush mounts above. They wished they had never moved. They had moved to a new home and found themselves feeling they were in a cookie cutter box. None of the changes I made were expensive and all were doable by myself. All to often people are going to the great effort and expense of moving without really understanding what is bothering them about the current home or how those items can be fixed. For the price of real estate commission you could have remodeled that bathroom, for the price of movers you could buy new appliances, etc.

    Love the blog!

    1. Thanks Paige, and I agree! They have SO many options online. I typically do all of my shopping online anyway- just because it’s easier and more convenient for me. It sounds like you’ve made amazing improvements to your home! Great job :) xo

  4. I’ve always thought of Lowes/HD/Menards lights as builder grade, so I’m curious how you define ‘builder grade’. Thanks!

    1. Interesting! And great question Beth :) I consider “builder grade” the lowest price point materials that all building companies supply to contractors. Typically lighting under $40 that is readily available at lots of stores who offer “to the trade”. Lowe’s definitely has builder grade fixtures for contractors who take advantage of that, but they also offer designer or mid range products as well (which I personally love). Hope this helps to clarify! xo

  5. I LOVE #2 from the floor lamps round up! I’ve been eyeing something similar (at a much higher price point) that I couldn’t pull the trigger on, and now I’m glad I never did! I’ll be picking that one up ASAP!

    1. That one is so pretty! So happy you were able to find the best deal :)

  6. These are beautiful – online selection has absolutely improved at the big box stores the last several years. I still love visiting Wayfair et al for their selection of multiple finishes for most fixtures. It’s so sad when I find a Lowes light that’s perfect except for the finish!
My husband can switch out light fixtures but it’s so painful how slow he is to get to it! We currently have 2 lights sitting in boxes that have been waiting a year for him to install. I try to keep sweet and not sour when I ask him periodically so he keeps on helping me out. And apart from those, at least 3 more really bad seashell flush mounts that will need replacements purchased!

  7. Love this list! Would love your POV: our master bath has a large 6-light sconce, an semi flush in the center AND a can light in the shower (so many). It’s only a 12×6 space too. were starting to plan our reno and I can’t decide what to do with the lighting- should I get rid of the semi flush; definitely get a smaller sconce above the vanity. It just seems like so many lights

  8. Your brass lamps in your bedroom- could you give us the details (if you don’t mind- how much you paid for them) and are there similar ones available. They are stunning and the new shades are perfect. Thank you for this round up. That #1 fan is getting purchased and installed this week!

  9. Pam Schroeder says:

I really love the square shades on the thrifted lamps, it’s a huge improvement. I also am fond of the star light fixtures and the gold flushmount for the hallways.

    1. I think so too! Thanks Pam :)

  10. Hiya!
It’s great to get such good guidance on things that we sometimes treat as an afterthought , which as you have so beautifully pointed out , is yet another way to enhance our rooms (hardware , shower fixtures, etc).
Do you have a good hardware source for vintage buffets ?
We need to replace some handles on my husbands grandmothers piece .
I could send a photo if you like?
Thank you for the great inspiration !
Me and my wallet are headed to Lowe’s this am 😊

  11. Great, helpful roundup Sarah! I’m wondering about your ceiling fan. I love your choice but do you feel like it provides enough light? We badly need to update our fan (ours is way uglier than your original fan) but worry about not having enough light. Our bedroom gets almost no natural light and our current fan has 4 60W (equivalent) bulbs.

    1. Thanks Melissa! Great question… it’s super bright! I’ll try to hop on IG stories soon and share it at nighttime for a better visual :) xox

  12. This is an amazing roundup! I’m amazed at all of the stylish options from Lowe’s and will defintely refer to this list during our remodel. Can you share where the marble table in your entry is from? It looks perfect for a small nook we have at the top of the stairs. Thanks!

  13. These lighting roundups are so helpful! I just referred back to this one for a friend, even though it is not a brand new post.

    1. I love hearing that, Judy!! :)
